ce in doing exactly what they should nothave done. In the latter part of 1874 Thakombau, King of Feejee, and hissons went to Sydney in an English man-of-war, to pay their respectsto the Governor of Kew South Wales. At Sydney the two youngest FEEJEEANS KILLED OFF BY MEASLES. 149 boys took measles, but the disease showed itself in such a mild formthat nothing was thought of it. On the return voyage in January theKing had a slight attack, but it was considered of no consequence, andon his arrival at Levuka he went ashore at once. The medicaldirections were ignored; some tribes who had become Christian re-nounced the new religion and drove out their teachers. In one instancewhere a teacher died of measles his Christian disciples concluded that itwas best to follow the old custom and bury his Avife and children withhim, in order to propitiate the demon of the scourge. Why was the disease so fatal here Avhen it is not so in our ow
