Wherevera pool exists, created by an offshoot of the mainstream, wherein a shelving rock or overhangingtrees form a sheltering or shady nook, a singlecut-throat of good size is found, sovereign of thedomain from which it drives the grayling andwhitefish. In the larger pools, caused by thesubsidence of the current in deeper water, it ap-pears to live in harmony with these fish. Wher-ever the cut-throat lives within access to salt water,it doubtless ranges seaward as far as the salmon.Under these conditions, a silvery coating is as-sumed, and the black spots disappear, leavingbut few traces of its fresh-water garb. When takenin salt water, it is found to be of increased size,upward of twenty-five pounds, and is generallycalled by market men and anglers the *salmontrout. The cut-throat is an omnivorous feeder,18

POPULAR FRESH-WATER GAME FISH Popular Fresh=Water Game Fish minnows, insects, worms of all kinds, grasshop-pers, fresh meat; and, above all, the artificial fly,when properly and skilfully manipulated, is mostattractive, for it is at all times, when the water isclear, a surface feeder, though not particular asto color or form of the lure presented to it. Theangler, visiting the native waters of this fish, needsonly to stock his fly book with flies used in luringthe Eastern brook trout. If he visits the Yellow-stone or any of the large rivers containing this fish,it would be well to have a fly rod not less thaneight ounces, as the fish attains to the weight ofsix or seven pounds. A subspecies is found in theYellowstone River adjacent to Livingstone, Mon-tana. It is a typical trout water, where the fishtake the fly viciously with deep and long surgesto escape the hook.
