On the Hudson River off Poughkeepsie, New York, a boat race for a purse of $6000 ends in controversy...
Harper's Weekly Magazine, August 5, 1865, p. 481.
07/18/1865 A well-attended four-oar boat race between the crews of the Thomas Collyer of New York City and the Floyd Fields of Poughkeepsie, New York for a purse of $6000 was held on the Hudson River near Poughkeepsie. The race ended in controversy when the New York boat won but was charged with a foul. The match referee, under severe intimidation from near-rioting New York City visitors, upheld the victory.
