sans, and wild carrot hold dominion, the Meadowlark isvery common throughout the Hudson and Mohawk Valleys. They arrive almost as soon as the snow has disappeared. Inthe Fall they become gregarious and, when the air growsfrosty, depart for the South. Our bird has few lark-likecharacteristics, being partial to the earth rather than the sky,and flying low with rapid and somewhat laborious wingstrokes. These are neatly woven, deep, grassybaskets, generally set in a bush low over the water, or sunkin the long grass of a bog. When the first brood has takento wing a second nest is built about the first of July.Red-wings are extremely sociable, and almost always livetogether in colonies. In the Fall they gather into flocks, and, after wheeling about in gay companies for a short time, departfor more salubrious climes.
