ry, I have not had the good fortune to run across it duringmy five years residence in Albany County. Our friend withthe lovely yellow breast is the very wizard among the birds.I do not know of any one who pretends to understand him.He shrieks, whistles, calls, purrs and whines, and performsstrange gyrations in the air. On a limpid June morning,when the air is sweet with the perfume of the white azaleaand the tangle in which his nest is built is heavy with dew, heis fond of disturbing the peaceful scene by a very bedlam ofunearthly sounds; then again he is as silent as a ghost andthe sharpest eyes cannot detect him or his mate. I havefound a great number of their nests, but I never flushed thebird from one; the domicile was always absolutely deserted,though the eggs were warm, showing that the parent had justslipped off silently into the surrounding shrubbery. I have nodoubt but that I was being watched by two pairs of blackeyes, but the birds remained invisible to me. I have, however,

Stealing softly into their haunts,I have seen them throw themselves up in the air, twisting andturning, up and down, uttering the while their uncanny crieslike little feathered imps. Then, at the snap of a twig, theywould disappear and silence would reign supreme so far asthey were concerned. The nest is a neatly woven grassy basket placed in a lowbush. Four or five eggs, whitish ground, thickly speckledwith brown, are the nest complement.
