Speaking of the execution of the con-demned four Mr. Troutner said:- ; On July 7, 1865, I had the pleasure ofbeing detailed as a guard at the hanging Iof Atzerodt, Mrs. Suratt, Herold and jPowell. I saw the death trap sprung, !but was too far away to hear the prison- Iers speak. Kept Part of Noose. Mr. Troutner declared that after thehanging he came into possession of apiece of rope which was used as thenoose for Mrs. Suratt. He kept it as amemento. I showed the piece of rope to myfriends frequently afterwards, and whenthey so desired I used to cut off a little

Among tho notable battles in which Mr.Troutner took part were those of BlueHills, Shiloh and the Vicksburg cam-paign. He was wounded only once dur-ing the war and that occurred in theengagement at Blue Hills. He was shotin the left side of his body, between theribs. -The bullet was never extracted. On one occasion Mr. Troutner narrow-ly missed being killed. It was on a sul-try day and he wore little clothing. Hewas carrying his rubber blanket acrosshis body. It had been folded sixteentimes. A cannister missile struck andpenetrated the sixteen folds, knockingMr. Troutner down, but not injuring him. My body was black and blue for atime afterwards, but otherwise I sufferedno ill effects, Mr. Troutner said.
