If further proof were wanting that the type of the early Venetian Renais-sance was notsomething outsideVenice, not Greeknor Roman build-ings, surely theScuola di SanMarco (1485)(Plate 26) would besufficient to carryconviction. Thelikeness to thefa9ade of theCathedral of St.Mark is strikinglyclose, and therecan be no doubtthat to a certainextent it formedthe model onw^hich this curiousstructure w^as de-signed. We cannotsay that it showsan advance upon its prototype, but its designer (MartinoLombardo) was honest in his aim of refining the propor-tions, and purifying Byzantine detail, having traced it backto its classic source. There certainly never w^as a build-ing quite like it in Rome, or Roman Italy, and it is onthe whole the most fantastic w^ork of the early Renaissance.One remarkable feature about the front is the attempt topicture a colonnade in perspective relief.
