Purpose of the course: To give aknowledge of a variety of ways of making and finishing gar-ments and to teach the use and care of sewing machines. IV. —Dressmaking: To teach the use of a system ofdrafting by which designed patterns may be made; to de-velop good taste in selection of appropriate colors, materialsand styles; to develop self-reliance and originality in dress-making and higher standard of work. V. —Art Needlework aims to give essentials of gooddesign as applied to needlework material and the use of thisknowledge on articles of clothing and house furnishings.Our students are taught to cut and fit garments and onCommencement occasions they wear dresses made with theirown hands.

GENERAL INFORMATION Location Claremont College is located at Hickory, North Carolina,one of the most beautiful and moral towns in the State,possessing unsurpassed advantages as a seat for an institutionof learning. Hickory, with her schools has long been lookedupon as a literary centre, whose reputation is now morethan state wide; it is, in fact, a city of schools and churches,of Christian homes, high culture, and hospitable people, and,as such, is commending itself to every young woman whoexpects to attend college. The town has a population ofabout seven thousand inhabitants. The morality of thecommuinity is proverbial. A more refined, cultured, andhospitable people can nowhere be found. Hickory is fast becoming noted as a health resort. Scoresof people spend their winters here in order to escape therigors of the nothern climate.
