n Life and Character, g.h.l. GRANT, Robert (1852- ), an Americanwriter whose Unleavened Bread, a problemnovel of the less unpleasant type, was one ofthe popular books of its year. Grant was bornin Boston and studied at Harvard, receivinghis Doctors degree and graduating in lawfrom that institution. He began to practicelaw in his native city in 1879, and from thefirst was successful. In 1888 he was made awater commissioner for Boston, and five jearslater was appointed judge of the Probate Courtand of the Court of Insolvency for SuffolkCounty, Mass. This post he has held eversince, and since 1895 he has been an overseer ofHarvard University. He married in 1883 adaughter of Sir Alexander T. Gait of Montreal.Judge Grants works include, in addition to thenovel mentioned above, The Undercurrent, TheBachelors Christmas, The Orchid and TheChippendales, and volumes of essays entitledThe Opinions of a Philosopher and The Art ofLiving. Witha singleness of purpose and an unyielding de-termination that wore out the defense of hisgallant opponents, Grant hammered his wayto victory and became the savior of the Union.The keynote of his military career is revealedin the message which he sent to Washingtonfrom the battlefield of Spottsylvania, where fortwo weeks, in 1864, the Confederate armies hadheld Grants forces in check: I propose tofight it out on this line, if it takes all summer.In 1868 a grateful people elected him to thehighest civil office in the United States, thePresidencj% and reelected him four years later.Grant was born on April 27, 1822, at PointPleasant, Clermont County, Ohio.
