The skyoccupies much of his space, he makes search-ing studies of it, and his favourite eflFect is aflash of light shooting across a piled-up massof clouds. The line of the horizon is low, andhe exhibits great mastery in painting the widelagoons, but he also paints rough seas, and isone of the few masters of his day — perhapsthe only one—who succeeds in representing astorm at sea. Often as he paints the same subjects he neverbecomes mechanical or photographic. We maysometimes tire of the monotony of Canalesunerring perspective and accurate buildings, butGuardi always finds some new rendering, somefresh point of interest. Sometimes he gives usa summer day, when Venice stands out in light,her white palaces reflected in the sun-illuminedwater ; sometimes he is arrested by old churchesbathed in shadow and fusing into the rich, darktones of twilight. His masterly and spirited painting of crowdsenables him to reproduce for us all those publicceremonies which Venice retained as long asthe Republic lasted : yearly pilgrimages of theDoge to Venetian churches, to the Salute tocommemorate the cessation of the plague, toSan Zaccaria on Easter Day, the solemn pro-cession on Corpus Christi Day, receptions ofambassadors, and, most gorgeous of all, the Feastof the Wedding of the Adriatic. He has faith-fully preserved the ancient ceremonial whichaccompanied State festivities. In the Fetedu Jeudi Gras (Louvre) he illustrates the acro-batic feats which were performed before DogeMocenigo. A huge Temple of Victory iserected on the Piazzetta, and gondoliers are seenclimbing on each others shoulders and dancingupon ropes.
