He declined a public reception tendered by his Albemarleneighbors, hoping instead, as he wrote: To have opportuni-ties of taking them individually by the hand at our court houseand other public places, and of exchanging assurances ofmutual esteem. From the very first no little time was devotedto reading; then his correspondence soon became extensivethrough letters to friends, noted personages, and authors ofbooks, pamphlets and addresses, who were furnishing him con-tinually complimentary copies. In spite of the great congeni-ality and friendship between himself and Madison letters wereinterchanged seldom, as their enemies made so much capital outof the false idea of Mr. Jefferson still dominating the admin-istration.
