Summary[edit]

Description
English: The construction of the temple was part of the vast building project of the Athenian tyrant Peisistratus in the 6th century B.C. The fall of tyranny, however, put a stop to these plans. The temple was finished in the 2nd century A.D. by the Roman emperor Hadrian. The ruins to the right of the enclosure in the foreground belong to the Themistoclean Wall and the Gate of Aegeus (A note has been added to the image. If you zoom in you will be able to read the inscriptions on the ground.
