[edit]DescriptionThe Ted Ellis Nature Reserve - Wheatfen Cottage - geograph.org.uk - 1341496.jpg |
English: The Ted Ellis Nature Reserve - Wheatfen Cottage. Originally Wheatfen Cottage was built as a pair of marshmen's cottages. Wheatfen Broad used to be the home of 40 years of Ted Ellis (Edward Augustine Ellis DSc FLS 1909-1986), a writer and broadcaster who died in 1986 after a lifetime devoted to natural history. He was Keeper of Natural History at the Castle Museum, Norwich, from 1928-1956. His cottage is surrounded by 130 acres of woodland and fen, one of the last tidal marshes of the Yare Valley and an area that is now recognised as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Wheatfen is now managed by the Ted Ellis Trust as a nature reserve, consisting of open fen, reed beds, sallow carr and the small broads Wheatfen and Deep Waters. The house and adjacent land are still owned by the family. Ted Ellis is buried > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1280803 beside the ruins of St Saviour's church > 1280792 on the edge of Church Marsh.
