. The place was raided ; Mrs.Byrne, Mrs. Sanger and the registra-tion clerk, Fania Mindell, were allarrested. When Mrs. Byrne, who was the firstof the trio to face trial, was sentencedto thirty days imprisonment, she imme-diately refused to take food or water asa protest against a law she holds unjustand unconstitutional. At the end ofthree days she was forcibly fed and atthe end of nine days, through a petitionof women to the governor, she was par-doned by Governor Whitman on theunderstanding she would no longer dis-obey the law. It was established that Miss Mindellsold a book, entitled What Every GirlShould Know. She was fined $50. It was not proved that MargaretSanger herself either sold contraceptivesor literature on birth control.
