DR. S. H. CHUAN Dr. Chuan is a graduate of Harvard Medical School, wherehe also took postgraduate studies. He has charge of a specialcollege for the training of surgeons for the Chinese army, in■which he holds the rank of surgeon-general. He is a leaderin Chinas public health movement are a large number of orphanages in other cities under thedirection of Chinese Christians or foreign missionaries. TheRoman Catholic Missions, as in other countries, have empha-sized institutions for the destitute children and orphans. The Social Service League ©f Changsha, an organizationof women inspired by the workers of the Yale Mission, hasled in the work of the prevention of infant mortality anddisease, and in the education of young mothers in the art ofchild raising. A district nurse, it reports, speciallytrained for obstetrical work, and two assistants have beenemployed to help the needy ones.
