Delaying building of theconcrete structure until the track hasbeen laid has the advantage that all thematerials can be hauled to> the point re-quired by the construction trains. After the standard gage track is inplace the grade is widened and the roadis ballasted by the large locomotivesand the center dump and the 5-yd. side-dump cars. These latter cars, althoughof standard make, have been altered insuch a manner as to facilitate the workconsiderably. The side doors, whichoriginally swung open from the top,have been changed so that the doors arehinged at the bottoms and the topsswing outward. The swing is limited topermit the door to drop no further thanthe level of the bottom of the car. Aschanged, the load is dumped far enoughto one side to clear the rail. The bal-last is frequently leveled off by the useof a work car provided with a plow in front and swingingside plows. This car is also used as a snow plow.

The centri-fugal pump inside is driven by a gasoline engine. As theconstruction work progresses the house, with all the ma-chinery inside, is put on a car and moved to the most con-venient point. Where it was possible to use the grading machine the August 3, 1907.) expense of grading per cubic yard was materially lessened.The grading done by the narrow gage locomotives and carscosts approximately 30 to 50 cents per cubic yard.
