At the present timethe Pacific Electric Company is running more than 600 carsa day over the Long Beach line and its connections,—theWhittier, Santa Ana, Newport Beach and Wilmington-SanPedro lines, and trafific is daily becoming more congested.As the Whittier line branches off at Slauson Junction andthe Santa Ana line at Watts, it is not until the latter stationis reached that this crowded condition is relieved. It will beno surprise to the company to find that the four-track systemwill have to be extended in less than a year. After the work of four-tracking to Watts has been com-pleted the next step will be that of building a line from SantaAna to Newport Bay to connect with the line just completedto that point from Newport Beach, and known as the East

The East Newport line, which was openedto traffic only a few days ago, is two miles long, from New-port Beach east across the Southern Pacific tracks to the bay.It makes the Newport Beach line the longest of the entirePacific Electric System,—forty miles. The schedule timefrom Los Angeles to the end of this line is i hour and.15 minutes. From Mount Lowe, the farthest point north,to the farthest point south and east on the Pacific Electricsystem the distance is 55 miles.
