A con-tinual contest for supremacy was waged with the ThirdAvenue Railroad Company, until practically all sur-face lines in Manhattan and the Bronx were controlled byone or the other. Poor management in the financing andelectrical equipment of the Third Avenue Railroad cablesvstem threw this company into difficulties, and eventually,in 1900, a controlling interest was secured by its rival. Atthe present time all surface lines in Manhattan and all inthe Bronx, with one insignificant exception, are controlledhy the Metropolitan Street Railway Company. Similarly,all elevated lines in these boroughs are controlled by theManhattan Railway Company, owned largely by the Gouldand Sage interests, and all steam suburban passenger rail-road lines by the New York Central & Hudson River Rail-road Company and the New York, New Haven & HartfordRailroad Company. In Brooklyn Borough the consohdation of the surfacehnes began with the acquirement in 1895 by the Bradyinterests of a number of Hnes, which were placed underthe control of the Brooklyn City Railroad. This companywas later leased to the Brooklyn Heights Railroad Com-pany. Shortly afterward the Johnsons acquired the At-lantic Avenue Railroad, which was united to their Nassausystem, then under construction. The resulting competi-tion was so energetic as to compel the purchase and con-solidation of this line with the Brooklyn City Railroad in1900; this consolidation forming the present BrooklynRapid Transit Company.
