Summary[edit]
DescriptionThe Sign marking the Site of the Battle of the Diamond, 1795. - geograph.org.uk - 556110.jpg |
English: The Sign marking the Site of the Battle of the Diamond, 1795. For a number of years leading up to 1795, there was open hostility on the part of Roman Catholics or Defenders towards their Protestant neighbours. Things came to a head in 1795 when the Protestants heard of the Defenders plan to burn all the Protestant homes in the Richhill Kilmore and Loughgall districts. A battle then ensued at this location, and rival sectarian gangs, the Catholic Defenders and Protestant Peep O'Day Boys fought a bloody skirmish called the Battle of the Diamond, that left around 80 people dead. This led to the formation of the first Orange lodges and the Orange Order as it is known today. The actual date of the Battle was September 21st. 1795. An annual service is held, marking the Battle, on the Sunday closest to that anniversary. |
