Such are the appellations conferred by the ministerand the public, on one of the most obnoxious and oppres-sive impositions that ever tried the loyalty, or awakenedthe remonstrances of the British public. The title, how-eyer, appears to be approaching, at least, to a completemisnomer, and in a few years will probably be extinctIt will be a task of some small difficulty, even for themost sagacious of our very able and intelligent ministers,to continue a tax on that which no longer exists, andcertainly, if the passing scenes of ministerial profusion,princely gaiety, clerical supplication, and all the othervarieties of form in which the public purse is robbedand exhausted, continue for ten years longer, so far frompaying an income or property tax, we shall have neitherincome nor property to be taxscourgeormonthly09crui
