ue. Infront of the colonnade a hedge of Coprosma, withits waxy green leaves, continues the effecttoward the building. It covers densely the ironrailing between the posts of the arcade and it isrefreshing to the eye from within as well as fromwithout. From behind its shadowy foliage allsorts of vines rise to climb gracefully and luxu-riantly over the arches of the arcade into theroofs and from these over the adjoining building, away up where the eaves and domes begin andwhere the mission bells swing in their belfries. It is difficult to describe the colorful beauty ofthese vines, particularly of the Bignonia, of avivid terra cotta yellow, contrasted with thecrimson vermilion of a rare Bougainville a. As if the solid frames ofthe buildings were not enough, rows of Euca-lypti, of Pittosporum, and Blackwood Acaciahave been set all around, outdoing each otherin setting a new record of annual growth. ThePittosporum, with their heavy orange-coloredclusters of berries,
