Summary[edit]
DescriptionThe Resurrection Window.jpg |
English: The Resurrection Window in the south aisle of the nave of
Christ Church is next to the last window in a series relating the story of Jesus from the foretelling of his birth to his ascension. An angel announces to Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of James, that “He is not here, he is risen.” Kneeling in the foreground is the Virgin Mary, identified by her symbol, the mystic rose. Although she is not mentioned in the Gospels as being present at this scene, many paintings and stained glass windows depict her there. In the panel above the glowing angel, the Risen Christ stands surrounded by symbols of his resurrection. The lower panels picture three appearances of Christ after the Resurrection. The Resurrection Window was made in England by the firm of James Powell & Sons. Note the figure of the White Friar, a trademark of the firm of James Powell, in the lower left (see detail above). |
