CLUMBER, NOTTINGHAMSHIRE, THE SEAT OF THE DUKE OF NEWCASTLE. Clumber, situated in the imme-diate neighbourhood of SherwoodForest, in the county of Nottingham,about four miles from Worksop, isa spacious and modern mansion,erected in 1767 by the eminentstatesman Thomas Pelham, Duke ofNewcastle, who died in the follow-ing year. The designs were fur-nished by Mr. Stephen Wright, andthe edifice is built entirely of stonesupplied by the estate. The building is quadrangular.The state drawing and dining rooms,library and kitchen, each measuring48 feet by 33, occupy the fourcorners; and the total number ofthe apartments amounts to one hun-dred and five. The collection of paint-ings which embellish them is bothextensive and valuable. The statedining-room contains four very largeMarket-Pieces, by Snyders, in his Vol. VII. No. XXXVIII. best style
