ote.—The letters should be pronounced as in Spanish. The Huitotos are a well-formed race, andalthough small are stout and strong, with a broadchest and a prominent bust, but their limbs, espe-cially the lower, are but little developed. Theirhair, long and abundant, is black and coarse, andis worn long by both sexes. A peculiar custom isthat of pulling out the eyebrows, eyelashes, andthe fine hairs of the other parts of the body. Thatrepugnant sight, a protruding abdomen, so commonamong the whites and half-breeds on theAmazon, is very rare among these aborigines. Among the women the habit of carrying theiryoung on their backs makes them adopt an inclinedposition, which they conserve all their life. Theirfeet are turned inwards, and when they walk theirthighs generally strike against each other as thoughthey were afraid. Notwithstanding these defects,it is not rare to find among these women manyreally beautiful, so magnificent are their figuresand so free and graceful their movements.

Among the men certain physical organs are com-pressed and tied up, and never reach their normaldevelopment. The women suffer few abnor-malities ; their breasts are periform and alwaysprominent, even among the old, in which case theydiminish in volume, but never hang down.
