94 TELEGONY AND REVEESION. arches, agrees with the Somali and Crawshays zebras(Figs. 34 and 35). I have photographs showing themarkings on the face in five Somali zebras. No two arealike, but in no case do the arches form acute angles, as inMatopo (Fig. 19). In all the hybrids the stripes on theforehead are more numerous^ and consequently narrowerthan in the Somali zebra. In the striping of the neck, body, hind quarters, and legsRomulus also resembles the Somali zebra far more than hissire. In the case of Matopo there are twelve stripes whichextend into the mane between the occipital crest and theshoulder stripe; in Romulus there are twenty-four stripesin the same position. In the Somali zebra there are, onan average, fourteen cervical stripes ; but evidently in thiszebra, as already mentioned, a certain amount of blendingof the cervical stripes has taken place.
