It wasthrough the streets of Philadelphia that theHessians, captured at Trenton, were marchedby their tattered guards. It was throughthe same streets that the entire Continentalarmy paraded, headed by Washington, whenit became necessary to convince the doubt-ing that the struggle against the power ofGreat Britain was not a hopeless one. Andit was here that Pennsylvanias Committeeof Safety put forth that unconquerable zealand determination which knew no shadowof fear and no abatement of hope until thewar had accomplished all they desired. During the war the British forces held pos-session of Philadelphia about nine months,having entered it on the 26th of September, 1777, and evacuated it on the 19th of June, 1778.
