n into vastproportions, and fleets of ships are con-stantly loading with this product of Penn-sylvania for various foreign markets. TheRed Star Line, between Philadelphia andAntwerp, established under the auspices ofthe Pennsylvania Railroad Company, com-menced running in the early part of theyear 1873. I* carries the Belgian andUnited States mails. The vessels of thisline have gained an exalted reputation fortheir performance at sea. They are nearlyuniform in size, are constructed of iron, andhave received the highest class at EnglishLloyds, under whose special inspection theywere built. The docks and wharves of theRed Star and American Lines are also a ter-minus of the Pennsylvania Railroad, so thatpassengers destined for points in the UnitedStates, beyond Philadelphia, are transferredwith their baggage directly from the steam-ships to the cars, by which arrangementthey are saved expense and annoyance. With that breadth of enterprise which hasmarked the Pennsylvania Railroad Company

I ) MANTUA—HESTONVILLE—OVERBROOK—MERION. 9 from the earliest period, its managers, severalyears ago, expressed a willingness to assistin the establishment of a regular line ofAmerican steamers between Philadelphiaand Liverpool, and in 1871 succeeded inorganizing a company, of which it has thecontrol, for that purpose. This companyhas now completed four first-class ironsteamships, built in Philadelphia, equal, inall respects, to any vessels ever floated, andthey are the only vessels of the kind thathave been constructed in the United Statesfor the Atlantic trade during the last four-teen years. The materials used in theconstruction of these ships are of Ameri-can production or manufacture, and thevessels of the American Line now in servicehave proved themselves to be among thefastest and most comfortable afloat.
