as itdodged along close to the ground,under and among the towering pines.Almost within reach, followed a hugeeagle, its motionless wings almostclosed. In spite of its great size it fol-lowed accurately the track of the flee-ing pigeon, its swiftly moving bulk asit rocked from side to side, making aroar like an express train. I am hap-py to say that a few seconds later athick clump of fir trees enabled thepigeon to dodge its pursuer and itdashed down the mountain side intothe safety of the deep canon below. Most of the eagles hunting takesplace on the treeless plains at thefoot of the mountains. Here a scantygrowth of bushes offers little coverto its principal quarry, the Jack Rab-bit. In company with some friendsone day, I watched a pair of theseeagles hunting jack rabbits. Theyswooped down and drove the rabbitto cover under a mesquite bush. Thenone alighted close by and began towalk toward the rabbit. He was sofrightened he dashed from his shel-ter only to be snatched up by the other
