The sponges aregathered by means of a long pole witha hook attached to the lower end withwhich the sponge fisherman is very ex-pert. He lies prone upon his stomachin the stern of a boat looking throughan ordinary water bucket with a glassbottom, which does away with theglare from the water and allows himto survey the bottom leisurely whilethe boatman rows or sculls the boat.A schooner lies at anchor nearby, fromwhich a half dozen or more of thesesmall boats fish, which returns to portwhen it is loaded or at night, as thecase may be. This Midwayhas become a resort for people whoseek innocent amusement and its pricesare within the reach of the most hum-ble. It is located at the terminal station,north of the Exposition proper. The performances are presented on ascale of magnificence never before at-tempted at free street shows. The at-tendance has averaged 17500 dailysince the opening, six weeks ago. Among the most notable of the onehundred big shows are the Streets ofCairo, Sing Sing Prison, Idols of Art,Streets of India, Trained Animal Expo-sition, German Village, White TopPalm Garden, Heaven and Hell, GypsyCamp, Persian Beauty Show, Palais dela Danse, Arctic Cave and Athletic Au-ditorium.
