The first tableau in the series would be one of calm bliss andjoy—not a cloud in the heavens, save that tinged and made beauti-ful by Hope. Then the scene changes. A tearful and desertedwife, with her sobbing child, keeping watch with her lone nightlamp until the breaking of the morn. Again it changes, andhaggard misery creeps into the picture. The tears of starved andshivering children embitter the cup which Fate presses to the lipsof the gamester. Once again it changes and we see a grave—a
