Text Appearing Before Image:
e Navy and the Air Force, he believed, must now learn, or be taught, to live to-gether in genuine friendship. Yet he feared that he himself would al-ways retain, in some matters, a prejudice infavor of the Army. During trie first twoyears of the war, he strongly opposed theholding of public Army-Navy footballgames in large cities, on the grounds notedat the beginning of this chapter, but in 1944he somewhat changed his tune, and for aninteresting reason. The President wantedmy advice as to whether or not he shouldshift the Army and Navy football game toNew York. That comes a week from nextSaturday. For two years we have beenhaving semi-private football games at thehomes of the two Academies . . . but nowthe pressure is for having it a public one. Thefact that the Army has a very good footballteam this year and has a darned good chanceof beating the Navy makes me a little morelenient to it than I was before. (Diary,November 13, 1944.) The game was held inNew York, and the Army won, 23-7.
