rieties are grown under congenialclimatic conditions, such as obtain in the northern parts of the State, they produce frut of high-grade quality without being subject tothe characteristic scab and cracking which affect them in the south.Should these or any other varieties unsuitable to the locality be established,no time should be wasted with them. They should be cut back and workedover with some variety or varieties known to do well in the particular placeconcerned. This method is shown in Plate No. i. The trees shown hereare two-year-old grafts of Rome Beauty worked on eight-vear-old stemsof Munros Favourite. In another two years, they should be capable ofbearing a good crop. These Munros Favourite trees were cut back onaccount of the fruit cracking badly, and thus rendered unfit for market. This is not a singular case, but one of many which has come under thewriters notice in the Diamond Creek and other districts south of theDividing Range. lo Aug., 191^.) 5o5 )oiinud of Agricidiiirc, Victoria. (lo Aug., 1912. There are other varieties of fruits whicli often pro\-e unprofitable onaccount of their non- or partial fruiting. This sterility or partial sterilitvis to a great extent a varietal characteristic due to underlying causes whichmay sometimes be remedied by cross-fertilization, whilst in other cases thethinning out of the fruit spurs has often the desired result. In the DiamondCreek district, Keiffer pear is extensively grown, and in many ca.ses isworthless as a cropper. This unprofitable condition generally occurs wherethe trees are planted in rich soil, producing very vigorous perpendiculargrowth, and isolated from oiher-varieties blos.soming simultaneously. Whenplanted in poor country, the vigorous growth is checked, and trees oftenbear well. This varietv is very susceptible to the influence of cross-fer-tilization. Such varieties as Harringtons ATctoria, Howell, Le Coute, andothers have proved suitable as a cross with Keiffer. AV
