Summary[edit]

Description Instituted by Numa Pompilius, the Vestals were Priestesses of the goddess Vesta. Most important of their roles was to tend to an eternal flame associated with the security and existence of Rome itself. This was where they lived as a group a life of ritual and virginal obligation.
