Summary[edit]

Description

On 9 August 1908, the Great White Fleet - 16 American battleships and their escorts - steamed into Auckland and a week of festivities. A symbol of American naval power, the Fleet circumvented the world between December 1907 and February 1909, stopping at twenty ports along the way. In New Zealand a feature of the six-day visit was a reception attended by most of the members of Parliament. As nzhistory.net.nz notes, the ministers had "travelled north from Wellington aboard the ‘Parliament Special’ – the first train to traverse the whole length of the still-unfinished main trunk railway."

Despite the ceremony, there was a darker undertow to the visit. In 2006 the North Shore Times reported the existence of a 62-page plan created from the visit. In case of war with Japan and New Zealand siding with Britain (who was bound to Japan in a 1902 alliance), American officers had collected secret intelligence needed to invade New Zealand. 'Naval War Plan for the Attack of Auckland, New Zealand' details the strength of Auckland forts and describes the size and number of guns. Referring to the harbours in the North Island, the report says: "Any of them could probably be occupied with little or no opposition provided the attack was sudden." Manukau Harbour was the best invasion point "in case the defences of Auckland Harbour proper prove too strong for a direct frontal attack".

These three photographs by Henry Winkelmann make up a panoramic view of the anchored Fleet in Auckland. Probably taken from Mt Victoria Reserve in Devonport, they show the vivid white paint that gave the ships their nickname. Also in view is Maungakiekie/ One Tree Hill (top left), Maungawhau/ Mt Eden (at the left join), and early buildings of Auckland's waterfront. The photographs were sent to the Patents Office for copyright a week after the Fleet's visit and are held at Archives New Zealand.
