Summary[edit]
DescriptionThe Golden Gate of the Temple Mount (3937833769).jpg |
The so-called "Golden Gate" in the eastern wall of Jerusalem's Temple Mount, facing the Kidron Valley. The trees behind the gate are growing on the platform which held Herod's expanded temple prior to AD 70. The Golden Gate is probably not part of Herod's construction, but dates rather to the late-7th or early-8th century restorations by the Umayyad Caliphs. This gate seems to have been used exclusively by non-Muslims, however, and was likely blocked up later in the 8th century when non-Muslims were forbidden entrance to the platform. English: Kidron Valley. |
