The next morning we started on mules andponies to Barronchitis. We had gone scarcely twomiles when we came to a mountain stream whichswallowed up the trail completely, and a little nativeboy showed us that all that was necessary to ford itwas to ride up the bed of the stream about half amile. Here the trail was discovered. A few milesfurther on we were royally entertained at a way-sideplantation by a lady and her two daughters. Wewere furnished, without the asking, with a cup ofdelicious coffee and several kinds of tropical fruits.We were the first Americans they had ever seen.
