The luml)ermen of the country have not been ready to acknowl-edge the usefulness of the foresters, as have been the wood-using in-dustries, on account of the work done at the laboratory. However,there has been no group of men who have more earnestly backed up theefforts of the Forest Products I^aboratory and tlie Forest Service toget the money necessary to prosecute the investigations at Madisonthan have the lumbermen, and we are going to hear some of the prob-lems of the lumber industry presented by a member of the committeeon economics of the National Fumbermens Association. It is veryuitfoi-tiiiiate that ^Ir. Scanlon who was scheduled to present thispaper has been unable to come, but the committee on arrangementswere exceedingly fortunate in getting in his stead, at the eleventhhour, a gentleman wliose wide experience amply fits him to cover thesubject very thoroughly. I have heard some of my friends say By all means say somethingcomplimentary about Madison. I heard yesterday our good friendMr. Weiss, speak of the bathing facilities afforded in the vicinity. Ihave tried them all and I can say that after an early morning swim inthis lake, one can undertake almost any obligation in connection withthe problem confronting us.
