English: The Farmland Wildlife Project. From the Information board in The Tump.
Developments in agricultural practices since the 1940's and our continuing demands on the countryside have brought unprecedented effects on wildlife. Many species are declining in numbers alarmingly. Serious efforts MUST be made if this situation is to be changed. It is hoped that the mosaic of habitats created here at College Lake, together with our Arable Weeds and Farmland Wildlife Projects, will promote interest and concern for our farmland wildlife. North of the lake formed a single large field of 14 hectares which had never been quarried. It was part of the College Farm estate, intensively cultivated until August 2000. After that it was incorporated into the nature reserve. The area has been divided into six main compartments by fencing and hedging. Each is being managed in a different way, to create a mosaic of new habitats in the interest of biodiversity. See 1412548 and 1412530.
