English: The Dog and Muffler According to http://www.westdeanpc.org.uk/Villages.htm , this was open by 1838 as a beerhouse; it was formerly called The Britannia. "The Dog - a Tibetan mastiff - is stuffed and its head takes pride of place above the fire breast in the Studio Bar. It wears a woollen muffler around its neck - a scarf of the local Berry Hill rugby club." http://www.easywell.co.uk/pubs/publist/gl14-17-cole-long.htm . Possibly a unique name? However, the former George Inn at Cinderford, long closed, was known by locals as the Dog and Muffler http://www.easywell.co.uk/pubs/publist/gl14-17-ch-coa.htm , so maybe the idea came from there. |
