| Description |
English: During the Hungarian War of Independence of 1848-1849, the Hungarian Hussar regiments, relocated by the Austrian military authorities, in the different provinces of the Habsburg Empire wanted to return to Hungary to fight against the Habsburg and Russian forces. Naturally, the Habsburgs forbade them to do this. Because of this, many Hussar troops deserted and tried to return to Hungary. A total of 14 desertions were made and attempted to return to Hungary. The numbers of the Hussar units which deserted varied between 50 and 200 Hussars. The Habsburg military leadership responded to this by sending troops to chase them, organized ambushes against them, in order to to force them to surrender. They managed to capture a number of Hussar troops, but the great majority of the Hussar units managed to reach Hungary. As a result of these desertions around 1000 Hussars managed to reach Hungary. After these adventurous desertions, the Hussars who returned to Hungary then fought against the invading Austrian and Russian forces for the independence of Hungary. |
