Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Covenanters Monument at Auchengilloch. This monument marks the remote spot (about 6 miles south of Strathaven) where conventicles were held in the covenanting times when Charles II was on the throne. The Covenanters were ruthlessly treated by the law - hanging, shooting, torture and deportation were their fate if caught. This lonely and well hidden spot would make it easy to post guards and have early warning of any soldiers approaching across the moorlands.

Conventicles were illegal Presbyterian field services, and attendance at one, or even the suspicion of attendance, meant death or, if you were lucky, imprisonment or banishment to the colonies. See https://www.geograph.org.uk/article/The-Killing-Times for more information.

Nowadays, open air services are still held in this spot in memory of the covenanters.
