But here, on the banks of the North Anna, Grant hadbeen completely checkmated by Lee. He realized this anddecided on a new move, although he still clung to his idea ofturning the Confederate right. The Federal wings were with-drawn to the north side of the river during the night of May26th and the whole set in motion for the Pamunkey River atHanovertown. Two divisions of Sheridans cavalry and War-rens corps were in advance. Lee lost no time in pursuing hisgreat antagonist, but for the first time the latter was able tohold his lead. Along the Totopotomoy, on the afternoon ofMay 28th, infantry and cavalry of both armies met in asevere engagement in which the strong position of Lees troopsagain foiled Grants purpose. The Union would have to tryat some other point, and on the 31st Sheridans cavalry tookpossession of Cold Harbor. This was to be the next battle-ground.

A CHANGE OF BASE—THE CAVALRY SCREEN This photograph of May 30, 1864, shows the Federal cavalry in actual operation of a most important func-tion—the screening of the armys movements. The troopers are guarding the evacuation of Port Royalon the Rappahannock, May 30, 1S04. After the reverse to the Union arms at Spottsylvania, Grant or-dered the change of base from the Rappahannock to MeClellans former starting-point, White House onthe Pamunkey. The control of the waterways, combined with Sheridans efficient use of the cavalry, madethis an easyr matter. Torberts division encountered Gordons brigade of Confederate cavalry at Hanover-town and drove it in the direction of Hanover Court House. Greggs division moved up to this line; Rus-sells division of infantry encamped near the river-crossing in support, and behind the mask thus formedthe Army of the Potomac crossed the Pamunkey on May 28th unimpeded.
