Description

Story of Queen Artemis: The Chariot of the Golden Throne. Pen, brown and black ink, wash, white highlights over chalk. 40 × 55 cm. Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris.

This is one of a series of tapestry designs on the theme of Artemisia, the legendary queen whose iconography was adopted by Catherine de' Medici, both queens being regents on behalf of their children and immortalising their dead husbands in grandiose architectural projects.
