Summary[edit]
DescriptionThe Chantry, Trent - geograph.org.uk - 709307.jpg |
English: The Chantry, Trent 'A chantry was a chapel built by a rich man. Sometimes it stood on its own and sometimes it was part of a larger church. Some rich men left land in their wills and the rent from the land was used to support a priest who would say (or chant) masses for the dead mans soul in the chantry. When he was not saying mass the chantry priest was often also a schoolteacher.' Ref 'A dictionary of historical terms by Tim Lambert' http://www.localhistories.org/glossary.html .
The Wyndham family of Trent played a significant part in the escape of King Charles II after the Battle of Worcester in 1651. The king had accompanied Jane Lane and her cousin Lascelles as their servant on the journey from Bentley Hall near Walsall in Staffordshire. Jane and her cousin returned home, probably very relieved! The Monarch's Way passes adjacent to the rectory and church. |
