Description
  • English: Reconstruction of the Frieze on the west wall of St. Mary's cathedral, Lincoln, sculpted by John Roberts and Alan Mickelthwaite, installed in 2001. The original frieze, much wheathered, was moved inside for preservation. It shows the torments of hell awaiting the damned (from L to R) Lust is punished by biting serpents and monsters, a devil pulls the hair of those guilty of sodomy, a nude miser with a purse around his neck is tormented by serpents and devils, serpents bite the genitals of avarice, and the harrowing of hell showing Christ standing on the devil delivering souls from the jaws of hell. http://www.churchmousewebsite.co.uk/frieze.htm
