culties were met. A gambrel roof gave a window 12 ft.high, with a roof height of 20 feet, while a balcony thrown out over oneend of the studio merged into a roomthat sprang like a low square towerfrom the junction of the studio withthe main building and was fittedinto the kitchen roof about half waydown its southern slope. A CORNER IN THE STUDIO. OUR HOME UNDER THE HICKORIES 671 room became desirable. So a Japanesescreen was added to the one we alreadyhave of wild vines and shrubbery thatclosed in the south porch; and it soonbecame our regular dining room. In the nearest small town, nine milesdistant, we found a capable plumber, and a good supply of porcelain-linedfittings. Our house was,at last, literally foundedupon a rock. Nowhere about it couldthe stick of my sketching umbrellago deep enough to hold, though insome mysterious way vegetation flour-ished. Carpenter and plumber searchedpatiently for a spot where a drain waspracticable, and, having found it, wenttheir ways. I was left to find a manto chop through the layer of porousrock to the unyielding mass that formedits bed below. Our water supply came through ironpipes from a river deep in the pineforest, far from human habitation anddrainage, and never fails us. It isgood for drinking and pleasant forwashing. Our shell was now complete. Eachaddition
