Artaxerxes was king over Persia, andISTehemiah, a Jew, was his cup-bearer, who carried his wine-cup to himwhen he wanted to drink. While Nehemiah was in the palace at Shushan, somemen came there from the land of Judah; and ISTehemiah asked them about theJews in that land, and about Jerusalem. The men told him that the Jews werein great affliction; that the walls of Jerusalem were still in ruins, and that thegates of the city had never been set up. When Nehemiah heard this, he ■wept.
