still worshipped the golden calves. Then the Lord sent Amos the prophet to speak to them. Amos came andsaid, that they were the only peoiole in all the earth whom the Lord had chosenfor his own, yet instead of serving him, they served idols, and disobeyed hiscommandments. They were cruel to the poor, they deceived and robbed oneanother when they sold corn and wheat, they hated those persons who did justlyand told the truth, but took bribes from the wicked and allowed them to go onin their wickedness. The Lord had seen all their sins, Amos said, and had kept back the rain from their fields, and sent famine and pestilence into their land, to show them he was angry; still they would not turn from their evil ways. Therefore a greater punishment should be sent upon them. There would be weeping and wailing in their streets and their vineyards; for an enemy should come who would gain the victory over them, and treat them cruelly, and they should be: carried away captives to other lands. 164
