ed like cakes made with honey. And they journeyed on and came to a place called Rephidim, but found nowater there. Then they found fault with Moses and said to him, Give us waterthat we may drink. Moses asked why they found fault with him. They answered,that he had brought them out of Egypt to kill them, and their little children,and their cattle, with thirst. Then Moses cried to the Lord and said, What shallI do to these people? for they are almost ready to stone me. Now by this time they had come near to a mountain called Horeb. And when Moses asked what he should do, because the people were almost ready to stone him, the Lord commanded him to take his rod in his hand and go on before them, until he came to a rock that was in Horeb, and the Lord said that Moses should strike the rock with his rod and then water would come out of it. And Moses obeyed the Lord. He took the rod in his hand and struck the rock and water flowed out of it, and the children of Israel drank of the water. 64

IN the third month after the children of Israel went out of Egypt, they camenear the mountain called Sinai, and encamped before it, And Mos.es wentup on the mountain and the Lord spoke to him there. And the Lord said he would come down in a thick cloud and speak withMoses on mount Sinai, so that the people should hear him. On the third day,in the morning, there were thunderings and lightnings, and a thick cloud, onmount Sinai. And all the mountain smoked, because the Lord came down infire upon it, and the smoke went up like the smoke from a furnace, and themountain shook greatly. And when a trumpet sounded long, and grew louderand louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him and called him to the top ofthe mount. There God talked with him, and gave him many laws for thechildren of Israel to obey. Afterward Moses came down from the mount, andwrote those laws in a book,
