Text Appearing Before Image:
hpiece, the elder sister who had saved him in infancy. They grew jealous, not of INIoses, apparently, but of hiswife, either Zipporah or a second mate newly wedded; andthey began to assert an independent leadership, claimingthat God had spoken through them as well as throughMoses. The quaint old print that here depicts the story, is oneof those mediaeval pictures where the successive steps areall shown at once. In the foreground Miriam and Aaronassert themselves against Moses and his wife. To theritrht, God, from within the tabernacle, summons the rebelsbefore Him and rebukes them. In the background arethe final scenes. INIiriam is stricken suddenly with leprosy;Aaron, terrified, intercedes for her; Moses begs God topardon her; and Miriam is compelled to remain alone inthe wilderness for a week until the disease has whollypassed from her. It was in rebuking Miriam and Aaronthat God declared Moses to be greater than all prophets, and promised to speak with him plainly, face to face. 11-75

®f)e ^ptes; i^eturn BY WILHELM EBBIXGHAUS, A GERMAN ARTIST OFTHE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY. And they returned from searching of the land afterforty days.—Num., 13, 25. AFTER these many lessons and long endurance,Israel came within sight of the promised land. The multitude stood upon the heights at Kadeshand gazed northward toward Palestine. Even yet, how-ever, they were not wholly confident of Gods strengthto help them. Instead of marching confidently onward, they begged Moses to send spies to see what dangers mightlie within this land of promise. Twelve spies set out, one from each tribe of Israel,Joshua being among them, and also Caleb, of the tribe ofJudah. They came to Hebron, where Abraham and theother patriarchs lay buried; and they plucked figs andpomegranates to carry back, showing the wealth of theland. Also they took a bunch of grapes so big that twomen bore it between them upon a staff. With these treasures they returned to where Moses andAaron and all the multitude awaited them.
